Course aims
The objective of the course is to provide a survey of British Victorian literature. In analysing the literature, associations between history, gender, philosophy, religion, science, manufacturing, visual arts, theatre and popular culture, economy, publishing policy and press are developed. The reading and analysis of texts is developed.
Brief description of the course
The course looks at literature and its context at a time when Great Britain became the most powerful country in the world. Prose and journalism reached the masses during that exiting, interesting and versatile period. Despite the patriachical and masculine nature of the period various works by women writers belong to the top. Independent work involves reading of set texts, writing an essay and preparing for seminars.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of Victorian literature, its influences and background, main genres and authors. Ability to read a text carefully and create associations. Ability to critically analyse a literary text .
